Supplying Oxygen to Industry

Aquaculture

Oxygen is the key input limiting the productivity of fish farms and hatching sites. The challenge to supply oxygen to fish farms is complicated by the fact that most sites are remote so cannot economically access the established liquid oxygen (LOx) market, and climates are changing rapidly making it ever more difficult to predict oxygen requirements ahead of time.

Nernst Electric’s on-site oxygen generator addresses these challenges by offering unparalleled production efficiency, massive turn down ability (> 10x, compared to PSA which can only offer approx. 40%), and with no moving parts, effectively maintenance free operation to minimise potentially fatal downtime for fish stocks.

Water Treatment

Global water utilisation is continuing to rise, and with it more requirements on treatment, particularly biologically. Using pure oxygen instead of air means that treatment can be much more efficient and accomplished using much smaller equipment. However, oxygen produced using PSA is incredibly energy intensive (> 1000 kWh per ton) and is therefore generally uneconomical for water treatment.

Nernst’s reactors can produce oxygen at a 5x lower energy cost, enabling this market.

Mining & Metallurgy

Metal ores globally are becoming increasingly low quality and refractory so that they must be converted to oxides from sulphides before traditional extraction techniques are effective. This is typically accomplished with an oxygen roasting process or biological treatment (BIOX process), requiring high purity, low cost oxygen.

Nernst Electric’s oxygen production reactors produce oxygen at unparalleled purities, > 99 vol% which far exceeds those from (v)PSA which is typically only 85 - 92 vol% which is often too low to be effective. Coupled with a 5x decrease in energy requirement, Nernst’s technology is a game changer for the mining and metallurgy industry.

Steel Production

New steel production requires enormous quantities of oxygen typically produced by a cryogenic plant located on-site. The major drawback of this approach is that cryogenic air separation necessarily separates out the other components of air, primarily nitrogen and argon, which represents an inefficiency as the desired product, oxygen, is only 21% of the gas produced. Further, cryogenic air separation plants are typically owned and operated by large industrial gas businesses that require offtake agreements spanning decades and operate effectively local monopolies.

Nernst’s technology can disrupt this entirely, enabling steel producers to produce only the oxygen they need, where they either own the plant, or opt to sign an offtake contract as low as 7 years.
